Jailer 2 becomes the highest-grossing Tamil film ever, overtaking 2.0 worldwide in just 11 days
Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has passed 2.0's lifetime worldwide gross of about ₹691 crore on its second Sunday, ending an eight-year reign at the top of Tamil cinema. Worldwide gross now stands above ₹710 crore.
IllustrationRajinikanth has broken his own record. Jailer 2 overtook director Shankar's 2.0 on Sunday, 25 October 2026, its 11th day in cinemas, to become the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time worldwide. The superstar now headlines both of the biggest Tamil hits ever made.
The numbers so far
- Worldwide gross: about ₹710 crore, according to Sacnilk
- India net after 11 days: ₹398.70 crore
- Second weekend (23 to 25 October): ₹64.35 crore India net
- Day 11 alone: ₹25.70 crore net from nearly 12,000 shows
- Opening day on 15 October: ₹59.70 crore net
Early estimates for its second Monday show the film moving past the ₹400 crore net mark in India.
The new all-time Tamil top five
- Jailer 2 (2026): ₹700 crore plus
- 2.0 (2018): ₹691 crore
- Leo (2023): ₹605.90 crore
- Jailer (2023): ₹604.75 crore
- Coolie (2025): ₹518 crore
Where the money is coming from
Through day 10, India contributed about ₹436.80 crore gross and overseas markets about ₹229.50 crore. Tamil Nadu alone had crossed roughly ₹170 crore gross, while Kerala has already beaten Leo's lifetime record for the state. Overseas, the Middle East has passed $8 million and North America about $7 million.
The one weak spot is the Hindi belt, where multiplex screenings were limited after a disagreement over the film's OTT window.
The film
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 brings back Rajinikanth's retired jailer alongside Ramya Krishnan, Vidya Balan and SJ Suryah, with several star cameos. Anirudh Ravichander's music for the first film was a big part of its pull, and the sequel has leaned on the same formula of swagger, humour and action.
What comes next
The real test starts now. Weekday numbers are settling, and Ramayana: Part One arrives on 5 November with a huge screen count, so holding theatres will decide how much further Jailer 2 can climb.
