Documentaries are not supposed to do this. You Can See Everything, Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim's film about disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, actually grew in its second weekend, taking about $19.5 million from 2,655 theatres as it expanded across North America. Its 10-day total now stands at about $45.1 million.

How big is this?

  1. Opening weekend (16 to 18 October): about $15 million from just 855 screens, with more than 2,000 sold-out shows
  2. That was the biggest opening for a non-music documentary since Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004, and the biggest for any film on fewer than 1,000 screens since Borat in 2006
  3. Second weekend: about $19.5 million, up roughly 25%, finishing just behind Clayface
  4. On Sunday, 25 October, it was the No. 1 film in North America

What the film is

The nearly three-hour documentary was shot in secret over three years and follows Holmes, with extraordinary access to her and her family in the month before she reported to prison. It premiered as a surprise at the Telluride Film Festival and has since earned near-perfect reviews, with a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fielder, known for The Rehearsal and Nathan for You, brings his trademark blurring of reality and performance to the story.

Cheap to make, huge to watch

The film reportedly cost under $7 million to produce and under $10 million to market. More than 70% of its opening audience was under 35, and 91% said they would definitely recommend it in exit polls. It will play in theatres for 47 days before arriving on Netflix.

The Oscar question

Critics are now openly asking whether it could become the first documentary ever nominated for Best Picture. With word of mouth this strong, it has the momentum to stay in the conversation all season.
