Himesh Reshammiya says he turns down films without romantic songs, as he reunites with Mahesh Bhatt for Naam
Himesh Reshammiya has said audiences expect romance from his brand and that his romantic songs draw about ten times the views of his other work. He is composing Naam: To Live Is War, presented by Mahesh Bhatt.
IllustrationHimesh Reshammiya knows exactly what his listeners want from him, and he is not shy about saying it. In a new interview with Bollywood Hungama, the composer and singer said he turns down films that do not have room for romantic songs, because audiences come to his music with that expectation.
What he said
Himesh explained that romance is what people associate with his brand, so a film without love songs would disappoint them. He also shared a striking number from his own channel: his romantic tracks get roughly ten times more views than his other songs.
That data point matters. His label, Himesh Reshammiya Melodies, has grown into one of India's biggest independent music channels, with more than 10 million YouTube subscribers and over 5 billion views, built largely on melodic love songs.
His next film: Naam
Earlier this month he was confirmed as the composer for Naam: To Live Is War, a romantic action thriller presented by Mahesh Bhatt.
- Lead: Veer Pahariya as an angry young man with grey shades
- Antagonist: Varun Sharma
- Writers: Sidhaanth Sachdev, Suhrita Das and Shweta Bothra, under Bhatt's creative supervision
- Producers: first-timers Riddhi Chawda and Utsav Upadhyay
- Music rights: acquired by Himesh Reshammiya Melodies
- Release: 2027
The makers have said a love story sits at the heart of the film, which is exactly the kind of brief Himesh says he looks for. The project reunites him with Bhatt after about 16 years. Bhatt wrote the story and screenplay of Kajraare (2010), in which Himesh starred and composed and sang every song.
Why it matters
Few composers talk this openly about what the numbers tell them. Himesh is treating his audience's taste as a brand promise, and in an era where songs are judged by views and streams, that clarity explains why he remains one of Hindi film music's most consistent hitmakers.
