Chris Brown avoids prison over London nightclub attack, gets eight-month suspended sentence
Chris Brown has received an eight-month suspended sentence at Southwark Crown Court for affray, after attacking producer Abraham Diaw with a bottle at a Mayfair nightclub in 2023. His co-defendant also avoided jail.
IllustrationChris Brown will not go to prison over the 2023 attack at a London nightclub. A judge at Southwark Crown Court gave the singer an eight-month sentence, suspended for one year, on Monday, 26 October 2026, according to Digital Music News.
The sentence at a glance
- Charge: affray, to which Brown pleaded guilty in July 2026
- Sentence: eight months, suspended for 12 months
- Costs: £1,500 towards court costs
- Maximum possible: up to three years in prison
What happened
In February 2023, at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair, Brown struck music producer Abraham Diaw, a former friend, twice on the head with a tequila bottle. Video shown in court showed him being pulled away.
Co-defendant Omolulu Akinlolu, who also admitted affray, received a four-month suspended sentence. The judge said he did not start the attack or use a weapon.
The judge's reasoning
Judge Tony Baumgartner said using a glass bottle aimed at the head was plainly dangerous. Brown avoided custody mainly because of his guilty plea, with stable work, charity activity and no recent offences also counted in his favour.
What it means
A suspended sentence means Brown will only serve time if he commits another offence in the next year. The case adds to a long public record that already includes his 2009 assault conviction.
