Tate McRae starts a new era with Housewife, the first single from her fourth album
Tate McRae's Housewife, her first release since the No. 1 album So Close to What, comes with a glossy video shot in the south of France and is tipped to challenge for the top of next week's Hot 100.
IllustrationTate McRae has opened the next chapter of her career with a title designed to get people talking. Housewife, released with its music video on the night of Thursday, 15 October 2026, is the first single from her upcoming fourth album.
What the song is about
Despite the name, Housewife is not a celebration of staying home. On The Tonight Show before release, McRae described it as a song about a woman who cannot be contained. The video, filmed in the south of France, flips the idea of the domestic wife into a fantasy of wealth, freedom and ambition, with yachts, sunbeds and a run of glamorous outfits. Several critics spotted nods to Britney Spears, including a sailor cap that echoes the flight-attendant look from Toxic.
A clue hiding in plain sight
McRae told Billboard that she teased the song months ago. The word Housewife flashed on screen at the start of her Lollapalooza set over the summer, alongside a ticking clock and a short unreleased snippet, but fans did not catch on at the time.
The numbers so far
- Fans pushed the song up the Spotify charts in its first week, and McRae thanked them on Instagram.
- It won Billboard's weekly reader poll for favourite new music with 51% of the vote.
- She performed at the Victoria's Secret show in Los Angeles in the same week.
The bar she has set
Her last album, So Close to What (February 2025), debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 177,000 units and delivered Sports Car, It's OK I'm OK and Tit for Tat, which debuted at No. 3 on the Hot 100. Her country-pop duet with Morgan Wallen, What I Want, then gave her a first Hot 100 No. 1. Earlier this year Billboard named her its Hitmaker at Women in Music.
What to watch
The next Hot 100, dated 31 October, will be the first to count a full week for Housewife, and fan trackers expect it to challenge Taylor Swift's Patient Zero for No. 1. This week's chart: https://mediamarvels.in/news/billboard-hot-100-october-24-2026-taylor-swift-patient-zero-third-week.
