John Mayer releases Tom and Jerry, his first solo single in five years
John Mayer's new single Tom and Jerry is out now, his first solo release since 2021's Wild Blue. It arrives ahead of a 21-show Sphere residency in Las Vegas in 2027.
IllustrationThe wait is over for John Mayer fans. Tom and Jerry, his first solo single in five years, was released worldwide on Friday, 23 October 2026, a day after it premiered on his own SiriusXM channel.
How it rolled out
- 15 October: Mayer posted a black-and-white teaser of a couple handcuffed together, captioned with a lyric about running away together.
- 16 October: on his 49th birthday, he confirmed the title and thanked fans for their patience.
- 22 October: the song premiered on Life with John Mayer, his SiriusXM channel.
- 23 October: global release.
Where the title comes from
The name is not about the cartoon. Mayer has explained that Tom and Jerry was simply the label he gave the first voice memo of the song idea on his phone, and it stuck. The teaser imagery and lyric point to a romantic, slightly mischievous runaway story.
Why it matters
Mayer's last solo single was Wild Blue from his 2021 album Sob Rock. Since then he has toured with Dead & Company, played solo acoustic arena shows and earlier this year featured on Lainey Wilson's single Phone, Keys, Wallet. Tom and Jerry is the first sign of new solo material in half a decade, and reports suggest more is on the way.
What is next
Mayer will take over the Sphere in Las Vegas for a 21-show residency in 2027, after adding three extra dates earlier this month. Each night will show three sides of him: a solo set built around acoustic guitar and piano, a full-band set, and the return of the John Mayer Trio with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino, together on stage for the first time since 2017.
