Karan Johar's Student of the Year is back, but not as you remember it. On 19 October 2026, Dharma announced Student of the Year: After Dark, a thriller series that swaps the glossy campus romance of the films for mystery, rivalry and violence.
Here is everything to know.
Student of the Year: After Dark at a glance
Release date: Friday, 13 November 2026
Platform: JioHotstar (streaming only, no cinema release)
Format: Web series
Lead: Shanaya Kapoor, in her OTT debut
Producer: Dharmatic Entertainment, the digital arm of Dharma Productions
Director: reported to be Reema Sengupta
What is After Dark about?
The series reimagines the franchise's famous competition as a dark thriller. Instead of a trophy and a school dance, the contest at its centre brings violence, secrets and dangerous rivalries. Early reports compare its tone to Euphoria and the Spanish series Elite-style campus dramas, rather than the colourful world of the 2012 film.
The teaser, released with the announcement, marked 14 years since the first Student of the Year. A full trailer has not been released yet.
Shanaya Kapoor's role
Shanaya Kapoor leads the series. Some reports say she plays a double role, but this has not been confirmed by the makers. She made her film debut in 2025 with Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan opposite Vikrant Massey.
The rest of the cast and the episode count have not been officially announced.
The Student of the Year story so far
1. Student of the Year (2012). Karan Johar's film launched Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, three of the biggest stars of the decade.
2. Student of the Year 2 (2019). Tiger Shroff led the sequel, which introduced Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria.
3. Student of the Year: After Dark (2026). A new format and a new genre for a new generation.
The songs that made the franchise
For many fans, Student of the Year is remembered as much for its music as its story. Vishal-Shekhar's 2012 album gave us:
1. The Disco Song, a remake of Disco Deewane, still a party favourite.
2. Radha, a Holi and sangeet staple.
3. Ishq Wala Love, the soft romantic hit.
4. Kukkad, the energetic Punjabi number.
5. Vele, the friendship anthem.
Student of the Year 2 added The Jawaani Song and Mumbai Dilli Di Kudiyaan. With a darker tone, After Dark is likely to lean on moody background scores rather than dance numbers, but a single could still arrive before release.
Why it matters
Big film franchises moving to streaming is one of the biggest trends in Indian entertainment. A thriller version of a beloved teen brand could pull in both nostalgic fans of the films and younger audiences who grew up on global streaming dramas.
