One of the most loved voices in Indian film music was cut off mid-performance in Mumbai on Saturday night. Shilpa Rao, the National Award-winning singer behind Chaleya and Besharam Rang, saw her microphone muted and the main stage go dark during her set at the Bollywood Music Project, and fans are angry.
What happened at a glance
- Event: Bollywood Music Project (BMP), 10th anniversary edition
- Date: Saturday, 24 October 2026
- Venue: Jio World Garden, BKC, Mumbai
- What went wrong: Shilpa Rao's sound was cut and she was taken off stage while still speaking to the crowd
- Reason given by organisers: schedule delays and curfew rules
How the set ended
According to Variety India, roughly 15 minutes into her set the main stage was blacked out and her sound switched off, while music started on the second stage for the Kutle Khan Project.
Reports say that when Rao tried to thank the audience for waiting, her words were drowned out as the next act began. Many in the crowd called it disrespectful, especially because she was one of only two leading female performers on the main lineup.
Shilpa Rao's reaction
Hours later, Rao posted an emotional note on Instagram. She said a piece of her heart broke that night, that it hurt to have something so beautiful taken away, and she promised her Mumbai fans she would come back.
The organisers' apology
BMP issued a statement apologising to the singer. The organisers said they hold Shilpa Rao in the highest regard and blamed delays in the schedule and curfew regulations for the abrupt end.
AICWA steps in
The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) condemned the incident in strong terms on 25 October, calling it a humiliation of a National Award-winning artist during a live performance. It is the second time in a week that a senior singer's treatment on stage has drawn an industry response, after the Daler Mehndi row in Uttarakhand. Who else played BMP 2026?
The anniversary lineup included Himesh Reshammiya, Hariharan, Anu Malik, Euphoria, Roop Kumar Rathod and Neeraj Shridhar, across stages covering Bollywood, folk, Sufi, indie and Punjabi music.
Why this matters for live music in India
- Multi-stage festivals run on tight clocks, and late starts usually hit the acts in the middle of the bill hardest.
- Curfews in Mumbai are strict, so organisers need buffer time built into the running order.
- How a festival ends a set matters. A quiet word, a final song or a clear announcement protects both the artist and the audience experience.
