Some songs take the long way round. Babydoll, a short, hazy track Dominic Fike released in 2018, has just become his first Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hit, eight years after it first came out.

How an old demo became a 2026 hit
Fike recorded his debut EP in 2018 while under house arrest in Florida. The EP sparked a label bidding war and a deal with Columbia, and its song 3 Nights became an international hit. Babydoll was a fan favourite but never a big chart song.
Early in 2026, Babydoll took off on TikTok. Columbia re-released it as a single in February, it entered the Hot 100 for the first time, and it kept climbing for months before cracking the top 10 this week. It even hit No. 1 in Austria.
What is Babydoll about?
The song is about wanting someone while refusing to admit how much. Its warm guitar, relaxed vocal and very short runtime make it perfect for repeat plays and short-form video.
New album: How To Quit Smoking
The timing is perfect. Fike's new album, How To Quit Smoking, is out on Friday, 30 October 2026 on Columbia, and he has just shared the single Pangea. He also returns as Elliot in Euphoria and tours as Comedy Tragedy Parody, with European dates in early 2027.
What artists can learn from Babydoll
- Your catalogue never expires. A song can find its audience years later.
- Short songs travel. Babydoll's runtime suits looping on Reels and TikTok.
- Be ready to move fast. Re-releasing it as a single when it went viral turned a moment into a career hit.
Indian artists have seen the same effect. Old songs like Mann Mera and Samjhawan keep returning to India's charts thanks to Reels.
